Letter To Meghan Schroeder: COVID-19 Response

Dear Representative Schroeder,

I hope all is well with you and your family during this challenging time. I’m writing out of concern for the abridgment of civil rights that Governor Wolf has been instituting in response to the current COVID-19 panic. I am persuaded that his lockdown is scientifically unfounded, unbiblical, harmful to the health and well-being of Pennsylvanians, and constitutionally illegal. I would like to persuade you of the same, and ask you to use your position of authority in the legislature to rein in the tyranny of the executive branch.

I recognize of course that such an endeavor would involve a great deal of risk to your own career and well-being. In our last conversation surrounding the 30,000+ Pennsylvanians being killed annually by abortion, I got the impression that your response to that crisis (or lack thereof) was driven more by the fear of man than personal conviction, which is entirely understandable. I can’t know if that impression is true or not, but I think that anyone would be dishonest who claimed to be entirely immune to fearing the opinions of others. Someone in your position, whose career is built directly upon maintaining the positive opinions of others, would certainly face such a temptation.

So before I present my case and my request to you, I want to share with you why you should submit your life and career to the lordship of Jesus Christ, and what I have found in my own life concerning how a man or a woman can face the most fearful circumstances, do the right thing, and find protection in the true and the living God.

Jesus Christ the Fearless

One of the things I appreciated about our prior interaction is that you didn’t pretend to be a Christian, unlike many politicians I’ve spoken with. I appreciate honesty in politicians more than hearing them say one thing, then do another. Nevertheless, if you had lived in an earlier century, without affirming the authority of the Bible over civil affairs, you never would have been able to hold your current office. The 1776 Pennsylvania Constitution reads as follows,

[The house of representatives]… having met and chosen their speaker, shall each of them before they proceed to business take and subscribe, as well the oath or affirmation of fidelity and allegiance hereinafter directed, as the following oath or affirmation, viz:

I do swear (or affirm) that as a member of this assembly, I will not propose or assent to any bill, vote, or resolution, which stall appear to free injurious to the people; nor do or consent to any act or thing whatever, that shall have a tendency to lessen or abridge their rights and privileges, as declared in the constitution of this state; but will in all things conduct myself as a faithful honest representative and guardian of the people, according to the best of only judgment and abilities.

And each member, before he takes his seat, shall make and subscribe the following declaration, viz:

I do believe in one God, the creator and governor of the universe, the rewarder of the good and the punisher of the wicked. And I do acknowledge the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by Divine inspiration.

And no further or other religious test shall ever hereafter be required of any civil officer or magistrate in this State.

The constitution has of course been altered to remove this devotion to scripture, in the foolish campaign to remove accountability to God from our government and everyday lives. However the founders of our state, men who demonstrated tremendous courage and wisdom in the face of British tyrants, thought it crucial to affirm the importance of God and His word in the governance of civil affairs.

Governor Wolf’s tyrannical response to COVID-19 is a good example of why we need God’s wisdom to guide our civil affairs. He has destroyed the economy and well-being of Pennsylvanians across the state over a virus that is no more deadly than the seasonal flu. If he would have consulted the scriptures, he would have seen that God gives civil government authority to restrain the progress of disease, but only by quarantining the sick, not the healthy / asymptomatic (Lev 13-14). If he would have consulted God’s word instead of man’s attempt to control his environment apart from God, then he could have stopped many suicides, instances of child molestation, spousal abuse, job loss etc.

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (1Co 1:25)

The problem is, following God’s way always ultimately places you in a position where you gain the favor of God, but lose the favor of ungodly people around you. For example, when COVID first began to strike fear into the hearts of people, I followed all recommended safety protocols, but began to research the virus, and to ask the Lord to show me how His scripture should guide my behavior. Ultimately I came to the position that many doctors and pastors agree with — that you quarantine the sick, not the healthy, that we don’t need to be afraid of COVID-19, and that the US and state governments are abridging our civil rights in a way similar to Nazi Germany. As I began to attack the narrative being put forward by Governor Wolf, I have been mocked by friends and family, accused of terrible and baseless things, and then praised and helped by godly people in my life who think critically about civil government and various modern abuses it perpetrates. More broadly, I’ve been removed from churches, lost even Christian friends etc. for faithfully calling the Church to repent concerning abortion, rather than succumbing to the fear of loss in position and relationship.

That’s the Christian life; we set aside our fears and choose to trust God rather than our own instinct of self-preservation. It’s what Jesus did, to the point of being crucified for His convictions. The apostles too were all were persecuted and most martyred for their devotion to God, Christ and the scriptures, and it’s the heritage of biblical Christianity throughout the ages. The Christian life isn’t always enjoyable in this age, but we do it because we love and fear God more than we fear man. As Jesus said,

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Mat 10:28-31)

For Christians, we make sacrifices now, so that we can benefit our fellow man in the present age. But we are not without hope or without reward; it simply comes in the future. We trust in the promises and character of the God who gave His only Son to take the punishment for our sins. By our trusting in Jesus’ death on the cross, God makes us like Jesus in that we endure suffering now, for the glory that is set before us (Heb 12:1-2).

Just like in our last meeting, in this letter I am going to be asking you to do some difficult, politically risky things, then will be holding you accountable for your response one way or the other by sharing our dialog online during election season. Presumably, as long as you are in office over the district where I am residing, that’ll be a common theme in our relationship, as much as I hate being a nuisance.

Yet I don’t want you to think that I only care about prodding you to do what’s right, simply for political reasons. I like you, more than most politicians I’ve spoken with, and I would like to see you in Jesus’ kingdom, both now and after you die. The only way for you to escape the wrath of God is to submit your life to the lordship and rule of Jesus, both in your personal decisions and your public policy. If you do so, He will forgive you of your sins, and welcome you into eternal life and eternal rule.

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Reasons to Challenge the COVID Narrative

I’ve been looking for a single, scientifically careful and precise resource to give you which explains the reasons why our state and national response to COVID-19 is detrimental to the health of society. The above press conference (with millions of views, and tens of thousands of shares) is a scientific validation of the approach that one would follow by looking at God’s law on quarantine described above (Lev 13-14) instead of man’s fear-driven breach of civil rights that we are seeing today, by relying on natural (herd) immunity as the the defense against COVID, rather than lockdown.

Here are a few hightlights:

Key Points
  • Worldwide statistics are consistently showing millions of cases, with very few deaths. This makes COVID-19 comparable to the common flu.

  • An examination of Sweden and Norway show us that there is no significant statistical difference between lockdown and no lockdown in a reduction of deaths.

  • Secondary effects of lockdown outweigh the negligible value in reducing the death count. Aside from economic collapse, these secondary effects include spikes in suicide, child molestation, homelessness and spousal abuse.

  • Lockdown of asymptomatic people contradicts our standard understanding of immunology and how the human body fights disease. Rather than helping to fight viruses, it brings us to a state of vulnerability to viruses. We can expect a spike in diseases after the lockdown is lifted, due to our lack of exposure to disease.

  • Public’s interpretation of death toll does not take into account comorbidity. It is the number of people who died while testing positive for COVID-19, not the number of people who died because they had COVID-19. The principal cause(s) of death are usually entirely unrelated to COVID.

Reasons to View Governor Wolf’s Lockdown As Illegal

My ask to you Representative Schroeder is that you would hold a press conference informing Pensylvania businesses, churches and and citizens that Governor Wolf’s lockdown orders are “unconstitutional, and therefore unauthoritative, void, and of no force.” It would probably also be wise to share with them the reasons that they do not need to fear COVID-19, but regardless of whether or not the disease should be feared, the decision to assemble together is entirely within the hands of the people.

At least three specific constitutional provisions speak to this point. First, regarding the freedom of churches to assemble, the Pennsylvania Constitution says the following,

All men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences; no man can of right be compelled to attend, erect or support any place of worship, or to maintain any ministry against his consent; no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience, and no preference shall ever be given by law to any religious establishments or modes of worship.

Governor Wolf cites several Pennsylvania statutes to justify his lockdown of the state in the stay-at-home order. All of these statutes are null, void, and of no force insofar as they contradict Pennsylvania;’s constitutional provision that allows people to worship God according to conscience, which includes assembling together (Heb 10:24-25). Given that Wolf’s stay-at-home order is irresponsible, biblically illegal, and scientifically counterproductive, continuing to dissolve church assembly is not unlike the tyranny we saw when the king of Britain would continually dissolve representative houses, leading to our declaration of independence.

The citizens have a right in a peaceable manner to assemble together for their common good, and to apply to those invested with the powers of government for redress of grievances or other proper purposes, by petition, address or remonstrance.

Governor Wolf’s shutdown of the Pennsylvania economy denies citizens the right to peaceably assemble for their common good — including the good of earning a paycheck — over fear of the flu. The citizens of Pennsylvania do not need the civil government to regulate their behavior to prevent the progress of disease; we do so on our own, every day of the week under normal circumstances. Those who are asymptomatic certainly have a constitutional right to assemble for their common good; furthermore, any decision to assemble together in contradiction to Governor Wolf’s order applies to the second half of this clause, in that we are doing so to express the grievances that he has brought upon our state.

No ex post facto law, nor any law impairing the obligation of contracts, or making irrevocable any grant of special privileges or immunities, shall be passed.

As one final note, Governor Wolf’s order (being classified as law under 35 Pa. C.S. § 7301(c)) impairs the obligation of contracts involving businesses which have been shut down. Contractual obligations such as Sales and Purchase Orders cannot be fulfilled, because those people who want to work, and who do not possess an irrational fear of flu-like diseases, are prevented from doing so.

Governor Wolf’s order contradicts the word of God, which is the highest law governing society, and by which all men will be judged. Furthermore, giving the governor the ability to produce his own legislation contradicts the separation of powers originally framed in the Pennsylvania Constitution, and turns him into a king who can do whatever he wants, as long as he defines an indefinite state of emergency.

So as stated, my ask to you is that you would research this issue for yourself, then use your position to hold a press conference informing the citizens and businesses of Pennsylvania concerning their constitutional rights. You don’t need to pass a bill; Governor Wolf’s administration is harming and trampling over the rights of Pennsylvanians, and all they need to know is that they have the constitutional right to disregard his stay-at-home order if they so desire.

Lastly, my primary concern (and that of likeminded individuals) is that this unprecedented abuse of executive authority will be used in the future to justify other forms of lockdown as measures to control the people. Similar things were done in Nazi Germany, are presently done in China and other countries today, and we want to ensure that this precedent leads our state to restrain the tyranny of the executive branch, rather than provide him with further degrees of royalty and autonomous power. So after dealing with the immediate crisis of illegal lockdown, I’d like to have further discussions with you on what legislation can be passed (or more likely repealed) to limit or eliminate the legislative power of the executive branch.

As an ambassador of Jesus Christ, I want to thank you for your time and attention to this issue, and I hope as you work through these things that you too will become an ambassador of Christ to Pennsylvania by submitting your life to His government. I’ll publish your response here when I have it,

~ Nate Schmolze
