Andrew was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he felt the cold, sharp edge of a sword against his throat. “There is a plague near these parts,” said the voice on the other end of the blade. “You’re lucky I found you. Come with me.”

After being disarmed of his own weapon, Andrew was led away from the road, into a fortress made of iron and clay. His captor wore a mask and a golden crown, and he brought Andrew to two other men with masks and gloves standing in the courtyard. Hundreds of other people lined the courtyard walls, about six feet apart, all wearing masks, and all having their arms lifted up in chains. Soon Andrew was likewise shackled, and the robber king sliced open the money sack affixed to his belt.

After the gloved men collected Andrew’s money and left, the woman to his right introduced herself. Her name was Keily; she had been shackled here for a month, but was grateful to at least be inside the fortress where the plague couldn’t reach her. Andrew replied, “I haven’t noticed any more deaths than usual; why do you think there’s a plague?”

“Oh the king told me about it,” she explained. “He hired some experts to tell us all what to do about the plague, and this is what they came up with.” Keily shrugged. “It’s not so bad. I heard he’s even planning to give us some of our money back, so we can eat again!”
