Some people believe that abortion is generally wrong, but in certain cases (such as rape conception), it should be allowed.
This is an example of false compassion. A desire to help and care for women who have been raped is of course a good and honorable thing. However it is never good to ease one person’s suffering by murdering another.
Consider the example of robbery. If a thief breaks into your friend’s home and steals her computer, is she therefore allowed to break into your home and steal your computer? Of course not; when a crime has been committed, it is the criminal who should pay the price, not an innocent human being.
In the same way, telling a mother to murder her child is not a compassionate way to care for her in her distress; it is false compassion, rooted in a lie.
If a woman is raped, conceives a child, gives birth, then two days later decides to kill her child and dump it in a trash can, we recognize that this is wrong. The only reason that killing a pre-born child sounds compassionate is because of ageism — the discriminatory belief that human beings have more rights because of their age, size, level of development etc. The word of God on the other hand grants equal rights to all human beings, because we are created in His image and likeness (Gen 9:6).
Rather than legalize murder, we should come around the victim and her child to care for them, and show the sacrificial, true compassion of Jesus that only comes from the body of Christ. For any mothers who have already murdered their children by trusting in the lie of the enemy, we should share with them the forgiveness that comes through trusting in Jesus’ death on the cross, to take the penalty for our sins.
Many Christians instinctively recognize that they have a God-given duty to help the needy and the oppressed. In a culture where the neediest people are the 1,000,000+ people being killed by abortion every year, they understand that Jesus does not give us the option to walk by these children on the other side of the road as they bleed into the ground (Luk 10:25-37).
Many Christians know that they should do something, but they don’t know where to begin. The Activate series is designed to give you a simple, free way to educate yourself about the abolition of abortion, and to make an impact on the people in your social network.
Five minutes out of your day can save the child of someone you know. Join the great social campaign to help shift the culture’s perspective on abortion toward repentance and trust in Jesus Christ.
